Dan's notes
- Note: Mike T was talking to Jim about uses for the smart space and possible exercises. Mike suggested a telephone-game type exercise. Jim brought up the idea of using the thunder system as a bunch of pictures that are passed around the room for incremental improvement, and then said something about a train. one group draws a picture that's one window on a train, and the next group draws the scene as the window moves forward.
- he used the side-effect of the thunder system that moves boards to the right when a board is inserted into the left. this is appropriating a side-effect to complete a task or brainstorm or something, and it was really interesting.
- there is one participant who came in late and sat in the back, out of reach of the cameras.
- jim is talking about an art installation that uses speech rec to post your words on the wall as you walk by, which is AWESOME.
- at 3:41, there's still nothing interesting onscreen
- the guy with the first question, his name is mario? 3:42
- right now it's still sandard-issue discussion. 3:46:39 PM
- jim stands in the middle of the room, describing the different tech and level of boringness.
- there are now two people off camera
- we didn't collect the tech forms or say anything about the research.
- divide into 2 groups.
- jim uses board to keep list of possibilities. he could do this from a laptop i think. it would be easier to use a keyboard to write this down. so why is he standing up? what social/gtechnical footing does he gain? 4:14:02 PM
- q: can we put multimedia on these? 4:12:05 PM
- groupwork
- tech guy becomes part of the process by necessity - we don't know if we can do what we want to do.
- the room reconfigures for groupwork.
- groups create pages willy-nilly, it looks like. lots of tablet usage.
- right group needs to use some pages that left group had appropriated.
- both groups are trying to use the board at once, and it can't handle that. no turn-taking. no group division or locking built into system.
- tech dude actually sat down in a group to consult. 4:46:19 PM
- tech dude changes orientation of board 4:48:18 PM
- left group activity
- web search
- an idea of making a timeline of fashion (a collage almost?)
- right group activity
- kids get tablets, start point and end point
- mural that's created in different parts of the world.
- tech guy has taken control of board 4:58:19 PM
- interesting desktop/noteboard metaphor mix there. 5:01:57 PM
- summary
- playing games with backs toward what you're supposed to draw
- (that would be rad - use the drawing as a backchannel. people have to stand with their backs to the board and stuff goes on behind them.)
- jim stands in sort of the center of the room 5:08:17 PM
- good thing cheryl was in the group so we know what's going on. 5:09:15 PM
Dan and Cheryl convo
3:43:51 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Hey Dan - taking notes of people ...
3:44:14 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Are you up yet...
3:44:22 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: eh.
3:44:36 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: but i'm taking good notes.
3:45:20 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: cool - note the first people to begin the conversations were students from Jim's original class (kmd 2003) where these ideas started (Mike and Mehdi)
3:46:09 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I think it is important to note that no one has said their names yet - they all know jim
3:46:17 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: but jim hasn't connected them yet...
3:46:48 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Philip - administer
3:46:55 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Jim asks direct question...
3:47:09 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Do you have our conversation (Dan) on history?
3:47:20 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: yeah, with timestamps.
3:48:09 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Cool - I will copy my notes here too.
3:48:58 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Magic School Bus - I need to comment shortly - about this technology can afford us this experience?
3:49:09 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: But if you prefer I will hold off til after the meeting?
3:49:15 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: It is a very pause meeting?
3:49:43 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Lots of pauses into the meeting?
3:49:56 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: We should have three formal questions? to guide the meeting?
3:50:15 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Maybe we should use the tech first and then people will have more things to say?
3:50:29 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: there's not much that interests me for research purposes in the current discussion b/c they're not using the tools in any unusual way, except for the fact that jim is sitting down with everyone else...
3:50:49 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: ...while he plays the vid, where he'd usually have to be standing. hard to tell if that's having an effect on the discussion, though.
3:53:05 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I agree ... It is only in the interaction that the tools and the discussion will get lively.
3:53:25 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: mismatched monitor size is ignored. meeting dynamics meet tech issues, meeting dynamics win (for once).
3:53:39 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: The group should becoming more connected and we are one hour into it and I feel personally disconnect.
3:54:43 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: right. even though it's nice that jim is within the group, the empty floor in the middle seems to seperate people. usually there'd be a table in the middle that people gather around, but that's not needed when everyone's got a tablet!
3:55:16 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Empty space good notation - he made the comment about this and it has become a reality.
3:55:22 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: it's kind of like a big living room where everyon'e facing the tv.
3:55:35 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: good observation.
3:55:41 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I like that metaphor.
3:55:43 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: so it's nice that jim isn't in the center, but that only makes the screen more central.
3:55:58 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: because there's nothing else up there.
3:56:35 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Yest - by this point in the meeting with this much technology there should be more?
3:56:58 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: feels very passive, and this part is supposed to be passive, but it'll be interesting to see whether this configuration still works when things get more interactive.
3:57:39 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Yest to contrast...
3:58:02 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: i love backchannels.
4:00:40 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: backchannels?
4:01:14 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: being able to chat on a seperate medium while a meeting is going on.
4:03:23 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Yes - I agree - I love it even during the kmd class.
4:04:30 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: the site firm i work for has an IRC channel that we use to coordinate while we're on conference calls with clients. it works very well.
4:04:37 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I do that often with Mike. If I was a teacher - I maybe upset with the multiple tasking - however I really this type of reflection.
4:04:47 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I think that this addes to our observations.
4:04:52 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: ditto
4:05:16 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I think that when I do my research I may do something like this - where two extra people comment to each other about their observations.
4:05:20 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I have to add ...
4:06:09 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Nice idea - thundersystem activity.
4:06:37 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: whoops, time to start paying attention
4:07:11 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Way screen - Encore and presentation on centre screen have to really think of ways to present within the kitl room
4:33:01 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I think that I have to participate
Changed status to Offline (4:42:11 PM)
Changed status to Online (4:46:04 PM)
4:51:03 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: okay are you back
4:51:10 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: never left.
4:51:19 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: I like this - that someone new speaking.
4:51:34 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: This gentlemen is the designer from UTS
4:51:58 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: (my screen looked like your screen was blank.
4:52:40 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: i.e. msn shut off.
4:54:21 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: huh
4:54:47 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: It is interesting the technology is slower than we imagine.
4:56:11 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Sorry I hope that my idea doesn't effect the project.
4:57:13 PM andfurthermore@gmail.com: this whole thing is very tangled, what with the researchers participating in the discussion, and the TA watching the researchers while participating in the discussion.
4:57:17 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Wiki addition is important to document the functionality.
4:57:30 PM madeirc@hotmail.com: Wiki more interactive than presentation.
Changed status to Offline (5:10:39 PM)
Cheryl's notes
Meeting General Notes
- purpose of meeting outlined
- Jim S. review of Switzerland…new people and who they are? (J. Slotta)
- introduction of new group and who they are? How is he connected between him and the group?
- Jim talking about Switzerland – (5 minutes) - showed ideas about the classroom about the future
- 12 people in attendance (technology designer, architect and educators (13 people Matt – came in late)
5. (In this case – noting that everyone interested about the information presented in the room – however, the community spaces not used – talk/presentation (first five minutes)
- idea – project room and openness; create stronger connections.)
- Interface – walls idea – for creating walls that project images.
- Triangle Model:
- Read, Listen, View Images, Watch Movie, Go to exhibit, Watch Demo See it Done on Site; (passive); Participate in Discussion, give a talk, simulate real experience, do the real thing (active).
- Are the people Connected in the Room – people site together in familiar groups?
*from the conference again - neat idea; Speech to wall – and dynamic audio photograph of what people are saying as they pass the world. As words got old – they fell to bottom of the screens. as they passed the wall (captured on the wall).
Guest from Nottingham Learning Science in England.
- Mike T and Medi – comment first (perhaps because these ideas were introduced first by our original class
School – global classroom – idea (Philip) not having connections with people with other end – Philip has interesting ideas of connection
- Encore – specifications SAIL smart space
- Group organic synthesized information …
- (beside me – designer yawned) dark room – quite space with dull noise in the back.
KITL room – thundersystem – I see that students idea board – or questions (on the thundersystem).
- people become interactive once activity started in small space (but 45 minutes left
- The idea was good - however the technology was not understood and the technology slowed down and crashed.
Note people are still not interactive?
Scott is very productive -
It is interesting; the conversation is revolving about the concept – swiss cheese.
I like the product idea for the group. But it was difficult time-frame
- This group needs to meet again for more meaningful interaction. In the room for two hours just to play with the technology.
Our system – didn’t work
